Spinach
Available occasionally during our Summer CSA and always during the first half of our Winter CSA (sometimes we have spinach in Jan/Feb, but it’s very weather dependent!), Featherstone offers bunched, crown cut, and loose cut spinach. Our spinach is quite different from the clamshell baby spinach you might find at the grocery store. Rather than small, delicate leaves, ours is typically more mature with thicker texture, deeper green color, and a rich, sweet flavor. It holds up well in cooking and is especially nutrient-dense. Our spring and early fall spinach is grown in the field and can be very perishable. Enjoy promptly in a fresh salad! During the winter months, we grow spinach in our high tunnels, where the cool temperatures force the plant to produce more sugar, resulting in sweeter, crisper spinach. A winter treat!
In all cases, we generally choose not to wash spinach before packing, as it stores and travels better this way. As always, we do our best to send you high-quality spinach, but as a field-grown crop, it reflects the conditions it was grown in. We’ll include information about how the spinach will be cut and important field notes in our product descriptions on your CSA member account.
Storage Tips
Keep your spinach in a bag or container in your fridge. We recommend waiting to wash just before use. A salad spinner is a great tool for keeping greens fresh while making cleanup quick and easy and we recommend our CSA customers have one as part of your kitchen tool line-up for making the best use of your CSA veggies! Field harvested spinach tends to be a bit dirtier than our winter high tunnel grown spinach, so it may need a double rinse.
