Melons
We grow red seeded watermelon and cantaloupe here at the farm, with watermelon generally making an appearance by the beginning of August, and cantaloupe following shortly behind in mid to late August. Melon season tends to be fast and heavy, with high volumes of fruit available for a very short period of time, usually only about 3 weeks of watermelon followed by 3 weeks of cantaloupe. Enjoy it while we have it! Fresh melon is such a special treat.
Since watermelon can be a bit tricky to harvest, Featherstone offers a melon guarantee: if you receive a watermelon that isn’t fully ripe, send us an email at csa@featherstonefarm.com and we will include a new melon in your next CSA box!
Storage Tips
Keep your melon in the fridge for best flavor. You don’t need to put a whole melon in a container, they have nice thick skins that protect them. I prefer to cube up my whole melon as soon as possible and keep it in a tightly sealed container in the fridge for easy snacking. Melons do not continue to ripen once off the vine, so no need to wait. Both watermelon and cantaloupe can develop a softer texture if not eaten right away, so be sure to enjoy within the week.
