Lettuce
We grow two types of head lettuce: romaine and red leaf lettuce. Romaine is a classic crunchy base for salads, but can also be grilled. Red leaf tends to be more tender with wide leaves ideal for lettuce wraps or topping burgers and sandwiches. We strive to have some form of lettuce (either heads or one of our salad mixes!) available all summer long as well as during the first month of our Winter CSA program. Romaine grows best in cooler weather, so look for it in your early and late summer boxes. Red leaf is a bit heartier and can grow in warmer temps, so we grow this variety through the summer.
Storage Tips
Please do not throw your head of lettuce straight into the fridge, it will wilt! Store in a sealed container or bag in the crisper drawer of your fridge. If it appears to be a bit wilty from the journey, trim a small slice off the butt end and place the whole head, with the butt end fully submerged, into cool water. Let sit for about 2-5 minutes, then shake off excess water. Store in the fridge with a towel in a container or bag. I always wait until just before using to wash my lettuce, unless it is already wilty!
