Cucumber

Cucumbers are typically available from early to mid July until late August. They are a heat loving veggie that does not do well in the cool early spring or late summer, so enjoy their fleeting abundance! Featherstone grows a “slicing” cucumber variety, meaning you do not have to peel the skins as they are thin enough to eat. Simply slice and enjoy!

Storage Tips

Your best bet for storing cucumbers is in a semi-perforated or loosely covered container that won’t allow these fruits to dry out and wrinkle, but won’t trap moisture and cause mold or rot. Keep in your fridge (or a slightly warmer “wine fridge" if you have one - they actually prefer closer to 40 or 50 degrees F!) and wait until just before eating to rinse. The two most common storage issues with cucumbers are either mold from being sealed with too much moisture, or wrinkling, from too much airflow. If you encounter either one of these, adjust your storage practices accordingly. Every fridge is different! If dark spots develop on your cucumbers in the fridge, it may be too cold. Keep in a crisper drawer or away from the cooling unit of the fridge (usually the top is the coldest).
