Job Description The CSA Field Production Manager is responsible for all aspects of field production for a group of crops produced specifically for CSA boxes. The Production Manager works closely with FFV partners and the CSA Manager in the spring to plan all dedicated CSA plantings, then works independently through much of the summer to bring them to harvest. A working knowledge of Spanish is very useful for this job. Early Spring The CSA Field Production Manager (FPM) decides what crops will be grown for the CSA in the very early spring, in consultation with the CSA Manager. (S)he evaluates potential field locations for these crops with a FFV partner. (S)he produces transplants for these crops in the greenhouse with the help of the greenhouse manager. (S)he prepares beds, seeds, and transplants these crops in the field with the help of the field crew. Main Season Succession plantings of various CSA crops are ongoing throughout the season, with the last spinach seeded September 1. The FPM is responsible for managing all aspects of these succession plantings- the transplanting / seeding, cultivation, cultural management, disease / pest scouting, spraying / foliar feeding, and irrigation- from start to finish. As with the spring planting, the FPM will perform much of the work independently, but also will work on larger projects with the help of other crew members. Harvest The FPM will monitor all plantings for maturity, and give notice to the CSA Manager 2 weeks prior to a particular crop maturing for harvest. The FPM will then work with the Harvest Manager and field crew to schedule and carry out all picking and post harvest handling of those crops. * * * * Requirements The CSA Field Production Manager must have a minimum of three years of experience growing vegetables, and a broad knowledge of horticultural practices and principles. (S)he will be expected to operate a wide range of equipment and tractor mounted machines, and should have at least a basic working knowledge of mechanics. The FPM must have a strong work ethic, and must be prepared to put in whatever hours are necessary to get the job done. (S)he must have the ability to work independently as well as in groups. (S)he must be flexible but determined, skilled at evaluating a range of tasks and prioritizing and carrying out work on the most important. Finally, (s)he must be a good listener and communicator, respectful of other people and ways of doing things. A working knowledge of Spanish is highly recommended. Compensation A competitive wage including housing and / or housing allowance is based on experience. The FPM works on average 50 hr/week, from March – October. |
